How to Care for Your Handmade Rug: A Complete Guide

By Warner's Carpet One Team · 2026-06-10 · 3 min read

A handmade rug isn't like a mass-produced synthetic rug from a big-box store. It's a piece of craftsmanship that can last decades — sometimes generations — if you treat it right. Here's how.

Vacuuming: Do It Right

Vacuuming is the single most important thing you can do for your rug. Dirt particles act like tiny abrasives — every step grinds them deeper into the fibers, wearing them down over time.

Spot Cleaning

Spills happen. The key is to act fast and use the right technique:

  1. Blot, don't rub. Use a clean white cloth or paper towel to blot the spill from the outside in. Rubbing pushes the liquid deeper and can damage fibers.
  2. Cold water and mild detergent. Mix a small amount of mild liquid detergent (like dish soap) with cold water. Dab the area gently.
  3. Rinse. Blot with a clean, damp cloth to remove soap residue.
  4. Dry. Place a clean towel over the area and weigh it down to absorb moisture. Allow to air dry completely.

Never use: Bleach, ammonia, or harsh chemical cleaners on natural fiber rugs. They can strip dye and damage fibers permanently.

Rotating Your Rug

Rotate your rug 180 degrees every 6–12 months. This ensures even wear — areas that get more foot traffic (like the path to the kitchen) will wear faster than corners. Rotating distributes the wear and extends the rug's life.

Sunlight and Fading

Direct sunlight will fade any rug over time, especially wool and silk. If your rug is in a sunny room:
