How to Choose the Right Rug Size for Your Room

By Warner's Carpet One Team · 2026-07-15 · 2 min read

Getting the rug size wrong is the single most common mistake people make when designing a room. A rug that's too small makes the entire space feel disconnected and floating. A rug that's too large swallows the floor and makes the room feel cramped. Here's how to get it right.

The Golden Rule of Rug Sizing

Your rug should anchor your furniture. In a living room, that means at least the front legs of your sofa and chairs should sit on the rug. In a dining room, the rug should extend at least 24 inches beyond the table on all sides so chairs stay on the rug when pulled out. In a bedroom, the rug should extend 18–24 inches beyond the foot and sides of the bed.

Living Room

For most living rooms, a 5' x 8' rug works for smaller seating arrangements (a sofa and one or two chairs). For larger spaces with a full sectional or multiple seating pieces, an 8' x 10' is the better choice. The rug should define the conversation area — if your furniture feels like it's floating away from each other, your rug is too small.

Dining Room

Measure your table, then add 24 inches to each dimension. A 60-inch round table needs a rug that's at least 108 inches (9 feet) in diameter or a 8' x 10' rectangular rug. If chairs scrape off the rug edge every time someone sits down, the rug is too small.

Bedroom

A 5' x 8' rug works for a twin or full bed. For a queen, go with 8' x 10'. For a king, you may need a 9' x 12' or layer two runners on each side. The rug should extend beyond the bed so your feet land on something soft when you get up.

Hallways and Entryways

Runners should be 6–12 inches narrower than your hallway and leave 12–18 inches of floor showing on each end. A standard 24" x 72" runner works for most hallways. For entryways, a 3' x 5' or 4' x 6' rug gives enough coverage without crowding the door swing.
